Conduct Process

The Code of Student Conduct (PDF) establishes scholastic and behavioral standards for NIU students and recognized student organizations.

The code applies:

  • On and off campus
  • At events sponsored by the university or recognized student organizations
  • During study abroad programs
  • To behavior conducted in person and on electronic platforms

The code does not normally apply to:

  • Contractual obligations
  • Employment obligations
  • Financial policy violations
  • Grade disputes
  • Parking policy violations
  • Traffic policy violations

The conduct process determines if a student is responsible for violating the code and, if so, the sanctions they’ll receive. The process emphasizes education, conflict mediation and restorative conferencing.

If the Law Is Violated

Behavior that violates the Code of Student Conduct might also be against the law. NIU will follow the conduct process before, at the same time or after off-campus civil or criminal proceedings. The findings of the conduct process, including any sanctions, will not change, regardless of the dismissal, reduction or resolution of criminal charges.

How the Process Works

After an incident is reported, a preliminary conference is scheduled. A temporary sanction may be issued in the meantime. There are three possible outcomes from the preliminary conference:

  • The student is found responsible for the incident.
  • The student is found not responsible or the charges are dismissed, and the matter is closed.
  • The student accepts responsibility for the incident and a restorative justice conference takes place.

If the student is found responsible in the preliminary conference, there are three possible outcomes:

  • A hearing takes place.
  • The student accepts responsibility and completes the sanctions, and the matter is closed.
  • The student accepts responsibility but disagrees with the sanctions, and a hearing takes place.

If the student is found responsible at the hearing, sanctions are imposed. If the student is found not responsible, the matter is closed.

Sanctions are intended to educate students and help them take accountability for their actions. There are many possible sanctions, including counseling, community service and loss of privileges.

A student can accept the sanctions imposed at the hearing or restorative justice conference and complete them. The matter is then closed.

Alternatively, the student can appeal the finding and/or the sanctions, and the matter receives further consideration.

If NIU police or staff ask for your ID or other information, you should give it to them. If you don’t, it can be considered a violation of the Code of Student Conduct.
