Nutrition & Wellness

Recreation Services and the NIU School of Family, Consumer, and Nutrition Sciences work together to provide graduate-level dietetic interns to assist in providing nutrition education.  Nutrition services are available, free of charge, for students and for a nominal fee for non-student members to assist with understanding personal nutritional needs and how to make smart food choices.

One-on-one sessions are private coaching sessions that may include follow-up meetings or referrals.  Clients are asked to complete a Client Assessment Questionnaire and 3-Day Food Log prior to their initial appointment.

  • If you want to maintain a healthy weight but are struggling to do so, sound nutrition advice can prevent problems associated with a restrictive diet or the side effects of many diet pills or programs.
  • If you are too confused by the "nutrition" information from commercial TV, magazines, Web sites, or radio.
  • If you have health concerns because of risk factors for chronic disease sound nutrition habits and exercise are critical in helping with chronic health concerns.
  • If you have a family history or current diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and related hypertension, certain cancers, adult onset diabetes, or osteoporosis.

Some of the ways nutrition coaching might help:

  • Determining caloric requirements
  • Menu and food planning
  • Restaurant and residence hall dining
  • Recipe development
  • Healthy weight management
  • Development of healthy eating habits
