A Metaverse of Possibilities

Ready to step boldly into a virtual reality of learning? NIU Huskies are already making that leap. We’re one of 14 pioneers chosen to launch the metaversity with a digital twin of our campus and a growing roster of spaces where faculty participating in this initiative can meet, engage, challenge and teach students. With your VR goggles and paddles, you’ll feel just like you’re really there – wherever there is, whether it’s a familiar NIU classroom or building or a museum around the world. Join us in the future today.

What Is the Metaversity?

A metaversity campus is both synchronous and asynchronous. Classes that are taught live by a professor can be recorded and saved in a content library for students to visit and experience later on their own.

"We have access to over 60 VR learning spaces – environments that faculty could teach in. For example, there’s a fully functional chemistry lab with burners and beakers and the various equipment, including an eye-wash station. Also, there are lots of historical places. You could go on virtual field trips. You could go to the Louvre. It wouldn’t necessarily just be teaching your full class in VR. It could be taking your students to experience an environment they couldn’t otherwise. VR provides that."

Jason Rhode, NIU associate vice provost for Teaching, Learning, and Digital Education, and associate professor in the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment
