Introductory Discrete Mathematics

DISCRETE MATHEMATICS (4 semester hours)

PREREQUISITE: Math 110 or Satisfactory performance on the Placement Exam

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To understand and connect concepts of discrete mathematics to real world problems and computer modeling
  • To develop mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills associated with discrete and finite structures.
  • To develop abilities in the application of logical reasoning, conventions and usage in mathematics, including mathematical induction

GRADING: Grades will be assigned on the basis of 650 points, as follows:

  • 3 hour exams worth 100 points each
  • Quizzes, 150 points total
  • Final exam, 200 points
There will be weekly quizzes, each worth 15 points. The top 10 scores will give the total quiz grade. The three hour exams will be held in class. The final exam is scheduled for 12:00-1:50PM on Wednesday December 8.

GRADING SCALE: The grading scale for this class will at least guarantee the following:

  • 85% for an A
  • 75% for a B
  • 60% for a C
  • 50% for a D

TEXT: Discrete Mathematics, fifth edition, by Dossey, Otto, Spence, Vanden, and Eynden (publ. Addison Wesley).

ACADEMIC CONDUCT: Academic honesty and mutual respect (student with student and instructor with student) are expected in this course. Mutual respect means being on time for class and not leaving early, being prepared to give full attention to class work, not reading newspapers or other material in class, not using cell phones or pagers during class time, and not looking at another student's work during exams.
