Message from President Freeman
At NIU, safety and preparedness are shared responsibilities that strengthen our community. By knowing what to do before an emergency occurs, each of us contributes to a campus environment that is ready to respond quickly, protect one another, and recover effectively.
We take pride in the university’s strong culture of emergency preparedness, reflected in the training opportunities we offer in emergency-response skills such as CPR, first aid, and basic life support.
Preparedness, however, goes beyond individual training. Each of us has a role to play in ensuring that NIU is ready to respond effectively should an emergency occur. The NIU Emergency Response Guide provides clear, practical instructions for a wide range of potential situations.
I ask all supervisors to review the guide carefully, print a copy for your area, and discuss its contents with your team. Please complete the sections specific to your building or department so that everyone knows what to do, where to go, and who to contact in an emergency.
Familiarity with the plan before an emergency occurs is essential because plans are only useful when we know and can apply them. By taking time now to review and personalize the guide, we strengthen our collective readiness and our commitment to each other’s safety.
Thank you for your time, diligence, and partnership.
