Hours
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, year-round.
Referrals
The clinic does not require referrals for clients, although some insurance providers do. Staff will help clients check their coverage.
Fees
The clinic uses a standard fee structure for services. Some fees are covered by health insurance plans or are paid by local agencies to the clinic. A sliding fee schedule is available so that no one is denied services because of an inability to pay.

Overview
NIU’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, part of the College of Health and Human Sciences, is committed to research and to the application of new knowledge in clinical education. The clinic is dedicated to providing evidence-based practice in the delivery of quality state of the art services in audiology, speech-language pathology and rehabilitation counseling to the citizens of northern Illinois and the surrounding areas. Comprehensive audiological, rehabilitation counseling and speech-language pathology assessment and treatment services are provided to individuals of all ages, beginning at birth. Bilingual services are provided in the areas of audiology and speech-language pathology.

- Newborn hearing screenings and diagnostic follow-up
- Hearing testing
- Hearing aid evaluations, fittings, repairs and assistive listening devices
- Auditory processing evaluations
- Auditory brainstem response testing
- Otoacoustic emission testing
- Aural rehabilitation for individuals with acquired or congenital hearing losses
- Baby sign groups
- Assessment and treatment of children and adults for language, speech, voice, stuttering swallowing, feeding or aphasia
- Early Intervention Team Services
- Family-based treatment services during evening hours
- Parent-Infant-Toddler groups
- Social skills groups for children with autistic spectrum disorder (late afternoon-early evening)
- Parent and sibling support groups (autistic spectrum disorder, hearing impairment)
- Stroke Support Groups
- Language-Literacy-Listening Team assessment and intervention services
- Swallowing, feeding and speech-language assessment and treatment for Kishwaukee Community Hospital, DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, the Unlimited Performance outpatient center, Oak Crest Retirement Center and Rockford Memorial Hospital
- Speech-language services to area schools
- Speech-language and hearing screenings as a service to area and regional schools, hospitals, and community service groups
- Free educational seminars to DeKalb County area on hearing health

In a 12-month period, the clinic provides:
- Speech-language assessments and treatment to more than 3,500 individuals
- Audiological services (hearing evaluations, hearing aid evaluations and fittings) to more than 1,000 individuals
- Outreach speech-language and hearing screenings to more than 2,000 individuals
- Clinical education for 125 graduate students
- In-service learning activities for 120 to 140 undergraduate students
- Services to individuals from DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Ogle, McHenry, Winnebago, Boone, Lee and Stephenson
