College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Educator Licensure

Want to teach at a high school?

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) provides programs leading to an Illinois Professional Educator License (teacher certification) at the secondary level, grades nine–12 in nine subject areas. The NIU CLAS Educator Licensure programs provide a rigorous and sequenced course of clinicals and coursework that lead to your success in passing the state approved programs and then getting a teaching job.

For information on the general requirements for getting an Illinois Professional Educator License, including testing requirements, go to the Office of Educator License and Preparation website.

Already hold an Illinois Professional Educator License? We can help you add secondary-level endorsements in these content areas.

Are you interested in a middle-level (six-eight) license or endorsement? You can earn this endorsement in addition to your secondary licensure. If you are only interested in middle level teaching, you would complete that program through the College of Education.

Support the Transportation Equity Fund

The CLAS Secondary Educator Licensure Transportation Equity Fund supports students who face difficulty traveling to their clinical experience. Students navigate many challenges in their training as secondary educators, and we don't want transportation to be one of them. We invite you to join us!
