This award is reserved for the university's top senior, recognizing excellence in both curricular and extracurricular activities. This past summer, Shay studied abroad in Cambodia, where she conducted research relating to genocide. Read the full article here. Congratulations, Shay!
Proposals are being accepted from undergraduate students for the 2009-10 USOAR awards. The deadline for students to submit 10 copies of their proposals to the appropriate college office is Wednesday, Dec. 2.
The USOAR program provides funds to students to carry out an independent artistry or research project under the guidance of a NIU faculty or staff member.
All undergraduates in every major are eligible to apply. Students must be available to carry out their USOAR project during part or all of the period, March 1, 2010, through Feb. 28, 2011. Students can receive up to $2,500 to fund their independent artistry or research project. To access proposal materials, visit http://www.niu.edu/usoar/.
Information sessions will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, and Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Holmes Student Center, Room 405. Current USOAR students will share their experiences and projects.

Joe Petitti, a Finance major at NIU, has been awarded a Gilman Scholarship for study in China for the Fall of 2008 with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). Gilman Scholars receive up to $8,000 to apply towards their study abroad program costs. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas. Applications for Spring 2009 study abroad scholarships are due October 7, 2008 and are available at www.iie.org/gilman.Students receiving a federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions are encouraged to apply.
