Having a good relationship with your students can help students succeed academically and increase their overall satisfaction with the university experience. However, one such relationship, the consensual romantic relationship, often fails and can result in severe consequences for both the faculty member and the student.
Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center, with the help of funding provided by a Venture Grant from the Northern Illinois University Foundation, will soon introduce self-paced training on online teaching at NIU. This project, known as “Preparing to Teach Online” (PTO), will result in a set of interactive learning modules focused on online teaching that participants can use to learn at their own pace and schedule.
During the summer of 2012, NIU’s Information Technology Services launched an initiative to Green Up! NIU. This includes an effort to become increasingly paperless. The Vision 2020 goal of 100% Wi-Fi coverage in student and academic spaces supports going paperless, as does the new student printing quota. There are several ways that faculty can support the Green Up! Initiative and help students avoid unnecessary printing.
With more and more instruction taking place online, faculty are increasingly seeking online tools and strategies that can promote communication, interaction, and live collaboration from faculty-to-student, student-to-student, and student-to-content. Web conferencing is an online tool that allows multiple users to view content, exchange ideas, and work collaboratively.
The NIU Instructional Guide for University Faculty and Teaching Assistants is a brief compilation of teaching-related information from several sources, including instructional guidebooks from other institutions, journals, and contributions from master teachers and academic support units at Northern Illinois University. The guide is meant to be a quick reference rather than a comprehensive source on teaching-related information. Topics include teaching preparation, effective instruction, assessment, classroom management, and more.
We are happy to report to the NIU community that the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center’s fall 2012 welcoming programs were all well-attended and well-received! We would like to thank all co-sponsors, presenters, and participants of our programs who helped make each program successful.
