School Counselor Information

This page is intended to serve as a resource for high school counselors and other school officials. Northern Illinois University is excited to highlight several new scholarship opportunities specifically for incoming students graduating from high school with the Class of 2014.

Huskie Legacy Award

Northern Illinois University values our alumni, which is why we have created the Huskie Legacy Award.  First-time incoming freshmen and transfer students will be considered eligible for the Huskie Legacy Award if their mother or father graduated from NIU.  The Huskie Legacy Award provides $1,000 toward tuition to children of alumni for their first year at NIU.

The DeKalb County Scholarship

NIU is a partner with DeKalb County high schools in educating students and preparing them for the challenges that lie ahead. As the "hometown" university, we want to encourage our students in their pursuit of higher education -- for the benefit of the individual students and their families, as well as the value that education offers to the entire community.

NIU will award DeKalb County public high school graduates a $4,000 scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year. The scholarship is renewable for a second year provided the recipients maintain full-time enrollment at NIU with a cumulative grade point average of 2.75.

Students admitted to NIU as first-time freshmen who will graduate from a DeKalb County high school in the Class of 2014 will automatically be considered for a scholarship. Scholarships will be offered to select students on an ongoing basis as funds remain available.

The NIU Out-of-State Huskie Scholarship

NIU is committed to enrolling talented and diverse students and we offer a wide variety of highly ranked academic programs at an affordable cost. The NIU Out-of-State Huskie Scholarship gives high-achieving students  from Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin the opportunity to reduce tuition costs even more.

The scholarship is valued at approximately $9,500 for the 2014-2015 academic year. This scholarship will be automatically awarded to academically qualified students who exhibit strong academic performance and potential. Students are encouraged to apply to NIU early to receive consideration for this scholarship based on the application for admission.

Scholarships will be offered to select students on a rolling basis as funds remain available.

Other Information for School Counselors

Please encourage your students to apply to NIU early because many scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis as funds remain available. Students must be admitted to NIU by December 1st to be considered for the maximum amount of scholarships.  Due to limited funding, not all qualified students may receive awards.

While some scholarships are awarded based on students' application for admission to NIU, students can still search for and apply for other scholarship opportunities.

NIU would like to thank all of the school counselors for their support and their help in assisting students in identifying scholarship opportunities in your local communities. Together, we can make NIU a reality for many talented and deserving students!
