Campus Life Building Suite 180Q
Dekalb, IL 60115
My name is Kiran Gill, and I am a senior Political Science major with a minor in Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship here at Northern Illinois University. I am thrilled to take on this new position, and serve as the Director of Governmental Affairs for the NIU Student Association.
I am from Palatine, Illinois, and ever since stepping foot on NIU's campus, I knew this university would allow me to make the most of my undergraduate experience. Thus far, NIU has far exceeded my expectations in consistently supporting my professional and personal endeavors. This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern in the nation's capital at the U.S. House of Representatives thanks to NIU's Congressional Internship program. This experience only increased my love of politics, by giving me an insight into the workings of government. I previously worked as a congressional intern at a local Congresswoman's district office, but of course interning on Capitol Hill was an entirely different story. I am confident that the skills I learned will enable me to positively contribute to the Student Association and NIU as a whole.
Since my freshman year at NIU, I have been involved in a wide variety of student organizations. A few of my primary involvements include serving as the President of Pre-Law Honors Society, and working as an undergraduate research assistant. In the Pre-Law Honors Society, I love being able to assist prospective law students the same way my mentors helped me in gaining the knowledge necessary for law school admissions and exposure to legal professionals. I began undergraduate research my freshman year with a faculty mentor on a project concerning Supreme Court Law Clerks. Thus far, this opportunity has greatly expanded my knowledge, and continues to open many doors for me. I am excited to expand my current role in the SA.
As Director of Governmental Affairs, I hope to continue building relations with the DeKalb community, along with other student government entities. I strive to increase civic engagement across campus through various initiatives. Additionally, it is also vital for students to remain informed on applicable legislation locally and nationally. I am grateful for all of the opportunities NIU made possible for me, and I am eager to expand these opportunities campus-wide, along with working with the appropriate administrators on establishing new opportunities for students to undertake.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance to you. I look forward to embarking on this exciting opportunity, and I hope to be working with you all on this new venture.
