The Student Association plays a critical role in the university’s system of shared governance. The Student Association serves as the voice of the student body to the administration. We further motivate students to be active leaders on campus by cultivating an environment of learning and experiences that go beyond the classroom.
As the Student Association continues to move forward addressing student concerns, it is all too often that administrations change from year to year and they are not as strong as they could be. Our goal is to leave this organization and the next administration a little stronger than when we found it so that the next group of leaders can carry the torch.
The SA was founded in 1968 to promote the welfare of students on NIU’s campus. 35 years later the organization’s purpose then and now is to voice the concerns and questions of the student body to the university administration. Student Association executive elections are held each spring semester through a campus wide election. Student Senate elections are held in the fall.
The SA provides a number of services and outlets whose goals are to provide the optimum support for the student body. The SA supports many campus events and activities through organizational funding. Funding is allocated through the SA to various organizations on campus that range from groups dedicated to providing art outlets and education on expression to groups which decide to form a rugby team or a hockey team, many different groups are on our campus.
