Ask A Question

Support Services

The LGBT Resource Center offers a safe and supportive environment for anyone with a need or concern related to sexual orientation or gender identity to talk with knowledgeable and caring staff members.

You can find more detailed information about who can use our services in the About Us section of our website.

We can offer a listening ear or supportive shoulder and knowledgeable advice.  We will listen to you, recommend resources, help you sort through your questions, and if needed refer you to other sources of assistance.

People contact us for many different kinds of personal support, such as:

  • Coming out to family, friends, or employers as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender
  • Responding to or supporting a family member, friend or colleague who has come out to you
  • Connecting with other lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people
  • Coping with relationship issues
  • Battling addiction issues
  • Finding a therapist or counselor
  • Feelings of depression, isolation, or suicide

These are just a few examples; whatever you need support with, whether serious or minor, we will try to assist you.

It is important to know that the LGBT Resource Center does not provide professional therapy or counseling services; however we can refer you to LGBT-friendly counseling resources.

You can contact us via email at lgbt@niu.edu or call to make an individual appointment with our Director, Margie Cook.

We may also be able to connect you with others experiencing similar situations.  In addition to individual support services, we offer occasional discussion and support groups that create the opportunity for sharing concerns and challenges in a mutually supportive environment.
