The NIU Commencement ceremonies are a traditional graduation ceremony where graduates wear black robes and a black mortar board. Academic Honor Pins, Ribbons, Insignias, Cords and Academic Sashes are allowed, as well as Mortar Board Senior Honor Society Medallions (You will need to contact the appropriate university organizations to obtain those awards). The Robes & Caps are to be returned after the recessional immediately following the ceremony. You do keep your tassel.

Do I have to order my cap and gown in advance to get the right size?
No. You will be asked your height when you pick up your cap and gown. Caps are one-size-fits-all.
Do I have to pay for my cap and gown?
No. This service is taken care of through graduation fees.
Can I get my cap and gown early?
No, they are only available on the dates published above. They do come packaged and will have fold creases. Please note, iron's and steamers are not allowed in the Convocation Center.
Can I get my cap and gown right before the ceremony?
Yes, check here for when the doors open for your ceremony. You can wait to get your gown just before your ceremony, however you need to make sure you have plenty of time to line up. Please note, your gowns are folded and will be wrinkled. Iron's and steamers are NOT allowed in the Convocation Center.
Can a friend pick up my cap and gown if I'm unable to do so?
Yes. Please make sure your friend knows your height, college and has a photo copy of your photo I.D.
Do I get to keep my tassel?
Yes, but you will be required to turn in your cap and gown after the ceremony.
