Kayaking on the Chicago River / Chicago, IL 

Water

Paddling on the scenic Chicago River is a whole new way to experience the amazing architecture of downtown Chicago! The paddle is over 3 miles each way from Lawrence Fisheries to Lakeshore East Park. Sign up fast before all spots are gone. Picnic lunch, transportation, instruction, and kayak rental is included in the registration fee.

Moonlight Hike at Afton Forest Preserve

Hike 

Take a snowshoe hike under the glow of a full moon at Afton Forest Preserve. Outdoor Adventures will provide snowshoes, leadership, hot cocoa, and transportation. This trip is a great way to get acquainted a local resource and meet new people with similar interest for the outdoors.

 Monthly Indoor Climbing at Vertical Endeavors / Glendale Heights, IL 

Rock

Have you ever wanted to challenge yourself? The newest Vertical Endeavors facility is one of the largest rock climbing gyms in the United States! This incredible gym includes bouldering areas, auto-belays, top ropes, and lead climbing. These trips have something for first-timers and experienced climbers alike. Transportation, instruction, climbing equipment (harness and shoes), and gym entry fee is included in the registration fee.

Standup Paddleboarding at Lake Carroll / Lanark, IL 

Water

Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is quickly becoming a very popular way to recreate and enjoy the water. Through introductory skills, games, and yoga, you’ll spend an awesome day on a scenic lake.  Lunch, transportation, trip leaders, and gear are all included. For the best experience, if you struggle with balance this trip may not be for you it may be best to try it out in the pool on 9/22.

What do you get when you combine standup paddleboarding and yoga? A relaxing evening on a paddle board in the pool. SUP yoga is a growing activity that can be challenging but tons of fun. Join us and give it a go! Included in registration is SUP equipment and instruction.

Day Climb at Devil's Lake State Park / Baraboo, WI  

Rock Hike

Climbing? Climb on! Head up to Devil’s Lake State park and spend the day climbing with Outdoor Adventures. Devil’s Lake has some of the best climbing not only in the area, but in the country! Enjoy a day of climbing and gorgeous scenery. Basic instruction will be provided for beginning climbers by our staff. Registration includes climbing equipment (harness and shoes), as well as transportation and lunch.

Caving at Maquoketa Caves State Park / Maquoketa, IA

Rock Hike

Let’s get down and dirty! Explore the caves on your hands and knees in the Raccoon Creek Valley of Iowa located two hours west of DeKalb.  Beyond the astonishing caverns and crevasses, the park is home to a restored prairie and six miles of trails that access the 16 limestone caves.  Great sights include the “Natural Bridge”, the 17-ton “Balanced Rock”, the 1100’ “Dancehall Cave” and the infamous “Wye” cave. This trip is known to fill up fast so do not wait to sign up and you can find out what makes Wye cave so infamous. Included in the registration fee are leadership, equipment (caving helmet with headlamp and pads), transportation, and lunch.

Horseback Riding at White Pines Ranch / Oregon, IL

Hike

Spend the afternoon trail riding through gorgeous scenery near the Rock River! White Pines Ranch is located just 45 minutes west of campus. This trip gives you the opportunity to view the area from a unique perspective – on a horse, of course! The trail ride will be guided by White Pines Ranch staff. Outdoor Adventures will provide transportation, leadership, and a snack. Register soon before spots fill up!

Kayak Pool Clinic at NIU's Gabel Hall Pool

Water

This workshop will introduce you to basic kayaking skills, blending skill instruction with practice. During the 2-hour clinic you will learn how to fit a boat, wet-exit, reentry and rescue techniques as well as paddle strokes and bracing. Beginners and first timers are welcome.  Included in the registration fee is equipment (kayak, paddle, PFD) and hands-on instruction with a student Instructor.

Day Hike at Starved Rock State Park 

Hike 

Spend the day hiking through Starved Rock, one of Illinois best known state parks. Don't miss this great educational experience. We are honored to be hosted with a guided hike by John Muir a volunteer guide for the Starved Rock Foundation. Explore canyons, waterfalls, miles of scenic trails along the Illinois River, and learn about the rich history in this part of our state. Transportation and lunch will be provided by Outdoor Adventures.
