Weekly Bike Ride with Outdoor Adventures and NIU Triathlon Team

Free Bike

This year Outdoor Adventures will be having free weekly bike rides, come hang out with our awesome staff and meet some awesome new people! This ride is for all skill levels.  Don’t have bike?  The Adventure Center will loan you one of their rental Trek mountain bikes (first come, first serve).   Come out for to find out about the local bike trails or come for a workout. The NIU Triathlon Club will also be there to take you for a fitness ride.

Date and time: Thursdays (seasonally), the group ride starts at 4:30 p.m. 


Outdoor Adventure Tailgate

Free Sports

Outdoor Adventures will host a free tailgate event, come say hello before we cheer on the Huskies for their first win! There will be fun games and giveaways including food and bags.   Look for the large red and white striped tent on the East side of Huskie Stadium on the south side of the lawn near Stadium Dr. South.

Crate Climb at NIU Student Recreation Center Court 1

Free Rock Sports

Stop by the Rec Center to experience what Crate Climbing is all about.  This challenging activity involves stacking and scaling crates as high as you can.  You are suited up in a harness and belayed by an experienced Outdoor Adventure Leader.  How high can you climb without the crate tower toppling over?  Find out more about the Outdoor Adventure program at this free special event.

Camp on Campus

Free Camp Water Sports

Connect, learn, and recreate with Outdoor Adventures this fall!  How does this sound: you and one hundred of your new friends hanging out under the stars in the glow of a bonfire while enjoying freshly roasted s’mores?  Sound appealing?  Then don’t miss the 4th Annual Camp on Campus event at the West Lagoon.  Free activities include sport games such as volleyball, slack-lining, Frisbee, bags etc.  There will be a multitude of workshops available where you can get exposure to outdoor skills such as paddling techniques, environmental skills, and more. A final schedule will be posted soon.  Free camping equipment can be reserved by registering online or visiting or calling the Adventure Center. Organized groups are welcome but quantities are limited.  Stop by today or register online today! Only one person per group (from 1 - 3 persons per group) need to register.

 Clean the Kish Volunteer Event at the Kishwaukee River in DeKalb, IL

Free Volunteer Water

The Kish is an amazing river, from its humble beginnings in Woodstock IL, to its end where it feeds into the mighty Rock River. It provides a lot of recreation for community members of DeKalb from fishing to canoeing. The Kishwaukee River is also home to 28 endangered, threatened or watch-listed species. A river this important to the area deserves some love. After the cleanup enjoy a free BBQ at the East Lagoon. Please join us on National Public Lands Day Sept. 27 to help clean the trash out of this amazing river.

Registration was required by Weds, Sept 24.  

Registered volunteers should meet and check-in and sign a liability waiver before 9:00 a.m. at the red tent in the parking lot in front of the north side of the East Lagoon (Parking Lot #14) at College Ave and the Kishwaukee River.

The volunteer crew will be divided into three groups. Transportation will be provided for those without a vehicle to the starting locations.

You are asked to select which work party you prefer and come prepared to participate in one of the options below. Waders, gloves, pickup sticks, nets, and trash bags will be provided.

*Option 1) Stand-up paddleboard w/ a few waders lining a canoe starting at Lions Park. Previous SUP experience or prerequisite of good balance is preferred to prevent possible injury. Be prepared to get wet. You may also bring a change of clothes. Only a few brave people are needed for this option.

*Option 2) Walk the shoreline and some waders* in the water starting at Hopkins Park. You can stay dry in this option.

Option 3) Clean up the Lagoon via shoreline and canoe. You can also stay dry in this option.

*Option 1 and 2 are close to 2 miles of walking and/or traversing in the river. Some spots may be deep, river levels vary frequently but no deeper than 4 feet. Caution and careful footing is encouraged. If you own polarized sunglasses please wear them to help see into the water for more trash finding. Please dress for the weather in layers and wear expendable clothing.

Upon completion of your project, all groups will meet back at the starting location. You are invited to participate in boating activities (kayaking, canoeing, and standup paddleboarding), disc golf and slacklining at the East Lagoon and enjoy a free lunch. The lunch provided is barbeque chicken, bratwursts, bean burgers, pasta salad, kale coleslaw, cookies, and lemonade.


Fall Family Weekend Disc Golf Clinic at the NIU's West Lagoon

Join Outdoor Adventures and the DeKalb County Disc Golf Club to learn and try your hand at disc golf at the scenic West Lagoon located near Stevenson Hall.  Everyone is welcome to participate! Stop by for an instructional clinic and play the 9-hole temporary disc golf course. $15 registration which includes a custom NIU disc ($10 value).  Parents of students participating in Family Weekend can register through Family Connections.  All other please register below.
