Campus Recreation 5K Run/Walk

When: Saturday, October 15th,
Race Start-time: 7:45 a.m.

Pre-registration:

Register here for credit card payments.

Fee: $20.00 per person.

  • Fee - $20.00 per person.
  • All pre-registered participants are guaranteed to receive a t-shirt (not guaranteed a size) and a goodie bag.
  • Pre-registration ends on Thursday, October 13 at 12:01 a.m.

Race Day Registration:

Fee: $25.00 per person.

  • Race day race registrants will receive a t-shirt and a goodie bag as long as supplies last (t-shirts nor sizes are guaranteed).
  • Begins at 6:00 a.m. and ends at 7:30 a.m. at the NIU Student Recreation Center.
  • Only cash or check will be accepted for Race Day registration.

*No refunds. Registration fees are not transferable.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are needed to help with encouragement, food distribution, set-up, and traffic flow along the course. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Chrissy Tluczek at 815-753-9353 or ctluczek@niu.edu.

About the Course:

The 5K is an out and back race and the terrain is flat and fast. The race route starts and ends at the Student Recreation Center located on the corner of Lucinda and Annie Glidden in DeKalb, Illinois. The race winds around the Huskie Football Stadium, pass the Convocation Center, to Northern View, around the Stevenson and Grant North Residence Halls, and then returning to the SRC. The race route is on blacktop. Water will be available at the start/finish and along the course. Aid stations will be located in the start and finish. Splits will be given at 1 and 2 miles.

Special Features:

  • Complete results will be posted at www.campusrec.niu.edu.
  • Refreshments for participants at the conclusion of the race.
  • Showers and lockers available.

Race Day Parking:

Registrants, spectators, and volunteers may park at the parking lot adjacent to the Chick Evans Field House located on the southwest corner of Lucinda and Annie Glidden.

Race Check-In & Packet Pick-Up:

  • All pre-registered participants must check-in and pick up their packets between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
  • All packets must be picked up at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the event.

Awards:

  • Race awards are determined from chip time for both men and women.
  • An awards ceremony will follow the 5K race at the Student Recreation Center at approximately 9:00 a.m. (as soon as race results are ready).
  • Awards given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall male and female 5K finishers.

Awards (Custom Cast Medallion) will be given to the top female and male in each age division:

  • 15-20
  • 21-24
  • 25-29
  • 30-39
  • 40-49
  • 50+ (Masters)
  • Wheelchair

Photographers

Our photographers will be shooting photographs of participants on the course and at the finish.

Safety Assurance

Northern Illinois University Police Officers will be along the route to stop traffic and create a clear path for your running and walking convenience. Certified CPR/AED and First Aid staff will be on the course as well.

Race Regulations

  • Bicycles, in-line skates, roller skates, other wheeled vehicles (except wheelchairs), dogs (except assisted dogs for individuals who are disabled), baby joggers, and strollers are prohibited.
  • Although we do provide traffic control at all intersections, it is still possible that an errant car to enter the course. Remain vigilant!

Hydration Stations

Hydration stations will be available at the start of the race, at the 1.5 mile maker, and at the end of the race.

Inclement Weather

The NIU Campus Recreation 5K Race will continue rain or shine unless there is thunder and lightning. If lightning or thunder is present, or other conditions deemed dangerous by race personnel, the race may not proceed. The race may proceed once the danger of lightning and/or dangerous condition has clearly passed. If race requires cancellation due to the above or otherwise, there will be NO RAIN DATES NOR REFUNDS given.

On Course Runner Communication System

Volunteers along the route will display an appropriate colored flag indicating current and existing conditions.

  • Green – Proceed
  • Yellow – Proceed with Caution
  • Red – Return to Start
  • Black – Stop, you will be picked up
