A message from President Freeman re: Thanksgiving Travel and Testing – Aug. 28

Campus and local community invited to free COVID-19 drive-thru testing event Nov. 16-18, plus opportunity to assist NIU researchers
Free drive-thru COVID-19 testing will be offered 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 16-18, in the Anderson Hall parking lot on the NIU campus. The test is performed with a simple nasal swab administered by a health professional, and results will be communicated by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) via phone within 4 to 7 days. Participants should enter from Kishwaukee Drive off Lucinda Avenue and exit onto Garden Road. Walk ups are welcome as well. This temporary testing opportunity is being offered in partnership by the IDPH, DeKalb County Health Department and NIU. For more information, see https://go.niu.edu/covid-test/.

Also at the three-day testing event, participants will have the opportunity to play a part in helping validate a new COVID-19 test currently in research development at NIU under the leadership of Elizabeth Gaillard, director of the NIU Molecular Analysis Core (MAC) Laboratory and professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and her research team. The new test involves a simple oral rinse. Participation in this second test is optional but important and more information is available online at https://go.niu.edu/drive-thru-research.

Reminder about account access for separated employees

Human Resource Services would like to remind supervisors and employees that when an employee separates from the university, their NIU account ID is disabled immediately following the date of separation from NIU and all permissions and authorizations are removed. Access to MyNIU HR Self Service remains for 60 days to allow the separated employee to view and download their final pay advice. After 60 days, the separated employee’s O365 email account will enter Microsoft’s deletion process. Please speak with your local IT support or email ServiceDesk@niu.edu for more information. This information is available on the Departure Checklist page of the Manager Toolkit.

Civil Service position posting deadlines

The last date Human Resource Services (HRS) will post a civil service vacancy for the calendar year 2020 is Friday, Nov. 20, to ensure that HRS has enough time to review applications and complete testing before the holiday break. Referrals for interviews and posting for vacancies will resume the week of Monday, January 4, 2021. Also, due to other testing obligations scheduled in HRS for January, there will be very limited opportunities for scheduling testing for new vacancies. As a result, we encourage you to take advantage of a longer posting period, which could lead to a greater applicant pool. If you have any questions, please reach out to your employment coordinator.

WNIJ reporter and alumna elected president of Illinois News Broadcasters Association
When Jenna Dooley (then Jenna Wright) first walked into WNIJ as a college freshman, little did she know that she would build a career in public broadcasting, first as a “Morning Edition” host at WUIS-FM in Springfield, Illinois, and later returning to WNIJ as a reporter and news director. She recently garnered recognition – and a chance to make a positive difference in the field of news broadcasting – with her election as president of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association (INBA). NIU’s EdSystems and P-20 Center help to develop essential employability skills in Peoria

Featured Key Moment
First Presidential Research Professors named (1982)
By the early 1980s, NIU had attracted a substantial number of accomplished research faculty who were quite vocal about the need to expand science facilities and Ph.D. programs. But movement of those initiatives through the multi-layered bureaucracy of a three-university governing board and the IBHE proved slow-going. Learn more about the Presidential Professorships >
