Mission

The Department of Anthropology’s mission is to promote an active understanding of cultural and biological diversity and to serve society by confronting local, national and global challenges. To do so, we engage in several activities central to NIU’s mission:

  • Teach our students about cultural and biological diversity through active learning experiences including field schools and international research.
  • Provide our students with advising and mentorship to enable them to pursue independent research, gain entrance to graduate programs and launch their careers.
  • Prepare our students to become global leaders who work to build a better society by promoting social justice.
  • Serve society to confront local, national and global challenges through collaborative work with communities.
  • Engage in cutting-edge research to better understand cultural and biological diversity and contemporary issues.
  • Make accessible the knowledge and resources we create.
