Selection Process: Works will be selected from a national call for entry, by invitation and co-curated by NIU Art Museum staff members and the Exhibition Advisory Committee.

Refuge and Refugee
August 24 - November 12, 2021 - Rescheulded for fall 2021 due to COVID-19 related schedule adjustments.

Exhibition Theme: Seeking contemporary artists exploring global humanitarian crises as displaced persons forced to flee their native country attempt to find refuge elsewhere.

Refuge and Refugee is part of an exhibit suite exploring global refugee concerns.

Storied References
January 12 – February 26, 2021

Exhibition Theme: Storied References - Visual artwork employing the familiar narrative motifs found in oral traditions, fairy tales, fables, myths and legends to grapple with the harsh truths of contemporary reality.

Storied References is part of an exhibit suite exploring adult narrative.

Exhibition Proposals 

The NIU Art Museum’s Exhibition Advisory Committee accepts exhibition proposals throughout the year. The committee reviews the proposals once a year. The museum calendar is usually scheduled at least two years in advance, and we may retain your submission for future opportunities. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you wish your packet to be returned to you.

Gallery Specifications

The NIU Art Museum has three exhibition galleries including the north gallery, rotunda gallery and south gallery as well as administrative offices and art storage handling areas, not shown. Any deliveries of artwork are to be coordinated and scheduled with the assistant director and curator.

Gallery Hours

Galleries Temporarily Closed
To support preventative care efforts on campus and for our community, the Art Museum galleries will continue to remain closed to the public until further notice.

Open to the public
10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday
Noon - 7 p.m. Thursday
Noon - 4 p.m. Sunday

By appointment for group tours.
Closed during the summer, between exhibitions and during university holidays.
