Application Instructions

Applicants must fill out the entire application in one sitting with the exception of the 2 recommendations.  Recommenders will login once the applicant has submitted their application. Each student will receive a special code that the applicant will need to give their recommenders as well as their Z-ID number.

The application includes several sections which ask for student biographical information; awards, honors, or achievements; community service; extracurricular and leadership involvement; employment experience; and hobbies or special interests.

There is a 45 minute time limit per page. Therefore, applicants are encouraged to prepare their essay answers in a word processing program (i.e. MSWord, etc.) first and then copy and paste them into the application.

The three essay questions you should be prepared to answer are (No more than 500 words per question):

  • What does it mean to be an NIU Huskie?
  • It has been said that tragedy doesn't create our character, it reveals it. Do you agree? Please explain.
  • The Forward, Together Forward Scholarship Endowment was created to honor the memories of students whose dreams were interrupted. What are your dreams? As a Forward, Together Forward Scholar, how will you honor the memories of the students we lost?

Essay questions will be evaluated for content and grammar, so proofread carefully!

In addition, the Scholarship Committee requires applicants who have pending criminal charges or have been convicted of a crime to disclose this information as a mandatory step in the application process.  Also, if an applicant has been expelled or dismissed from an educational institution for disciplinary reasons, an accurate and complete explanation of the circumstances is required.  Disclosure of this information will not automatically bar an award of the Forward, Together Forward Scholarship, but does require review and evaluation.  Falsification of information may result in a recission or withdrawal of an award.
