Student Association Senate

As the primary legislative body of the Student Association, the Senate works to represent and act on student interest. Per the SA Constitution and Bylaws, the Senate’s responsibilities include:

  • Appropriation of funds to SA-recognized student organizations
  • Official recognition of student organizations
  • Review and check the actions of the Executive branch
  • Place advisory referenda on the ballot during elections
  • Confirm appointments to the Executive and Judicial branches
  • Investigate and recommend policy on student government and university issues
  • Pass resolutions on behalf of the student body

Senate elections are held annually at the end of September. Students elect a total of 40 senators, 8 from each of the five districts. Mandatory informational meetings are held at the beginning of September. Polling stations are located in DuSable Hall, the Holmes Student Center, Founders Memorial Library, and the Campus Recreation Center. You must bring your NIU OneCard to vote.

Any spots on the Senate which remain open following the election are filled by appointment. Contact the Speaker of the Senate for any inquiries regarding at-large Senate appointments or for other opportunities to work with the SA Senate.
