Finding Housing

It is up to you to secure your housing arrangements. NIU offers a wide variety of housing options.

On-campus Housing

Residence Halls are a great option for undergraduate students (very few Graduates students live in the Residence Halls because the Halls do not support a Graduate lifestyle). Residence Halls offer on-campus housing and meal plans for all students. Entering freshmen are also required to live in these Halls. New undergraduate students should receive a housing application in the mail after they have been admitted. Please fill this out and return it (along with the deposit fee) to the Housing Office. If you do not return these things, no room will be reserved for you.

Please be aware, if you sign a Housing contract, you will be required to live in the Residence Halls. Students who change their mind and decide to live off campus will not be able to cancel their Resident Hall room.

International House. Most international students who choose to live on-campus will be put in the International Hall of Douglas, Wing B. This Hall includes International students and American students. The goal of this Hall to give American students and International students a chance to live and interact with one another. It is a great opportunity to experience American culture, while also having the comfort of other international students close by.

University Apartments are another possibility for on-campus housing. You must be over the age of 21 to be eligible for the Apartments. These apartments fill up quickly so please apply early if you wish to secure accommodations.

Off Campus Housing

Roommate Search

NIU does not work with outside Housing Companies. If you're looking to live off-campus, you'll need to check out a Map of DeKalb and Contact Local Property Owners.

University Plaza. The University Plaza is a Residence Hall not run by NIU. Please visit their website for more details.

You can also visit the Northern Star Housing Guide for a listing of off-campus apartments.
