Withdrawal Information

Students are awarded financial aid based on full-time status (12 credit hours per semester). Before a student withdraws froma course, they need to take into consideration their financial aid status.

Less Than Full-Time Attendance

Before withdrawling from courses and falling below 12 credit hours per semester, students need to:

  • Consult with your financial aid counselor
  • Make sure they are enrolled for at least six credit hours per semester to be eligible for nearly all forms of financial aid
  • Failure to complete all credit hours attempted during the semester with a passing grade will be considered an unofficial withdrawal and financial aid may be adjusted. Refer to calculating the return of title IV funds below.

100% Withdrawal

If you withdraw from all your courses at NIU, you will have your Federal aid adjusted according to the number of days you were enrolled for a specific semester. The date of withdrawal, not institutional costs, will determine the amount of Federal aid that must be returned to the federal programs.
