SUPERVISION

The primary role of the intern is trainee. Each professional activity is supervised, either individually or in a group.

Clinical supervision: Interns receive 2 hours per week of individual supervision for clinical cases. Licensed psychologists provide this with new supervisor(s) assigned after six months. These primary supervisors assist the intern in establishing training goals and provide supervision for individual clients, intakes, and emergencies. Audiotapes, videotapes, and observation are a regular part of supervision, and interns may choose to observe senior staff. In addition, clinical supervisors are available to discuss professional development concerns. Group therapy experiences are supervised by senior staff co-leaders, or by senior staff in the event that interns co-lead a group.

Specialization and developmental programming supervision: Interns have a specialization supervisor with whom they meet individually for one hour per week. The specialization supervisor will be responsible for:

  • Helping the intern to establish his or her own sense of identity as a specialist in the area

  • Assisting the intern in developing clinical expertise

  • Training in the design and implementation of developmental programs

  • Providing reading lists

  • Brainstorming possible activities and supervising those undertaken

In many cases the supervisor will serve a coordinating function. While the specialization supervisor may supervise clinical cases related to the specialization, in no instance will there be dual supervision of a case by the clinical and specialization supervisors.

Supervision of supervision: Interns receive one hour of supervision per week regarding their supervision of a practicum student. Typically this supervision will be provided in a group.

Consultation supervision: Group supervision is provided for one hour per week to discuss the consultation rotation.

Assessment supervision: Interns meet weekly for group supervision of personality assessments, and eating disorder and substance abuse assessments.
