MULTICULTURAL EXPERIENCESCSDC is committed to providing training that addresses the need for psychologists to be sensitive to and knowledgeable of the diversity among clients, students, and the population at large. NIU’s student body includes approximately 26% ethnic minorities, primarily African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian students. CSDC clientele reflect this diversity. In 2004-05, 13.1% of our individual and group clients were African-American or Black, 6.5% were Asian or Asian American, and 3.1% were Hispanic. CSDC has a number of programs, which are designed to bring mental health services to these populations, as well as to gay, lesbian, and bisexual students and to women. One of the priorities in assignment of clients to interns is to reflect this diversity as much as possible. Interns may be asked to present workshops to a wide range of groups on campus, such as Women's Resource Center; the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center; the Center for Black Studies; and Latino Resource Center. Diversity issues are addressed in supervision, through seminars, and through the specialization. Our staff provides culturally and racially diverse role models and mentors for trainees. Interns may participate in a weekend retreat entitled "Dialogue on Race," which brings together diverse groups of freshmen to discuss issues of race. |
