Dr. Bershad joined the CSDC staff in 2007, and has worked with college students for many years in various capacities. Her career in counseling psychology has focused on university and college counseling centers, and she has had experience at four previous centers. Her current work includes administrative responsibility for clinical operations, as well as involvement in the training program and providing clinical, outreach, and consultation services to the university community. Her areas of expertise include multicultural counseling and training, ethics, gender issues, group therapy, and eating disorders. Her counseling orientation is integrative, with an emphasis on psychodynamic/interpersonal and relational perspectives.

Elizabeth Garcia, Ph.D.,

Dr. Garcia has been at the CSDC since 2005 and has experience working in both the university and community settings.  Currently, she provides individual and group counseling, while also overseeing and coordinating substance use assessments for the predoctoral interns.  Her counseling orientation is strength-based integrative, with an emphasis on interpersonal-process, cognitive, solution focused, and motivational enhancement perspectives.  Dr. Garcia’s clinical areas of interest are student substance use, the effect of substance use on family and peer relationships, relationship concerns, depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, pet loss, and supervision.

Anne Kubal, Ph.D.,

Dr. Kubal joined the CSDC staff in 2006 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University.  She earned her master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University and completed her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Michigan State University.  Dr. Kubal’s clinical interests include eating disorders, self-injury, perfectionism, relationship issues, diversity, trauma, and training and supervision.  Her therapeutic approach is integrative, with a strong emphasis on dynamic/interpersonal and feminist perspectives. Dr. Kubal also serves as coordinator of CSDC's practicum training program.

Richard J. Long, Ph.D.,

Dr. Long has been at the CSDC since 1988.  He is a member of Division 32 (Humanistic Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.  In addition, he is a member of the Association for the Development of the Person-Centered Approach (ADPCA), the Association for Humanistic Psychology (AHP), the Focusing Institute, and the World Association for Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy and Counseling (WAPCEPC). His theoretical orientation is client-centered / experiential.  Dr. Long has extensive experience working with college students in psychotherapy.  He also regularly supervises predoctoral interns and practicum students.

Joy Mutinda, Ph.D.,

Dr. Mutinda has been at the CSDC since 2007. She has worked with college students for over 6 years both at the university and community college level. She has experience working with clients of different ages, races, cultures, sexual orientations, and ability levels. Dr. Mutinda’s clinical interests include eating disorders/body image concerns, multicultural counseling, LGBTQ concerns, group therapy, and interpersonal/relationship difficulties. Her therapeutic approach is integrative with an emphasis on feminist, dynamic/interpersonal, and cognitive-behavioral perspectives.

Tim Paquette, Ph.D.,

Dr. Paquette has been a staff member at the CSDC since 2004 and he has worked exclusively with university students for many years. He provides individual and group counseling and is training director of CSDC's APA accredited predoctoral internship program. His areas of expertise include multicultural issues, relationship concerns, men's issues, and anxiety concerns. Dr. Paquette’s professional interests include college student development, diversity education/training, social justice, and supervision. His counseling orientation is integrative, with an emphasis on interpersonal-process, humanistic, and cognitive perspectives.

Diane Pospisil-Kinney, M.S.Ed., NCC,

Ms. Pospisil-Kinney provides individual counseling at the Counseling and Student Development Center. She is also the coordinator for all outreach services provided by CSDC. Her master's degree included an emphasis in student development in higher education. Her past training and experience includes working individually and in groups with victims/survivors of abuse, neglect, and assault, college students, and within a community mental health center. Her specialty areas include the treatment of trauma victims and women's empowerment.

Dr. Ruxton joined the CSDC staff in 2008 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University.  She also has experience working with college students at Iowa State University and Arizona State University.  Dr. Ruxton’s counseling orientation is integrative, with an emphasis on interpersonal and dynamic approaches that allow individuals to examine concerns from a relational perspective.  Her clinical interests include grief and loss, trauma, relationship and family issues, women’s issues, eating disorders, and training/supervision. 

Micky M. Sharma, Psy.D.,

Dr. Sharma joined the CSDC staff in 2007.  His career has focused on university counseling centers and has spanned across five previous centers.  His work in counseling centers has included administrative responsibility for both the clinical operations and training aspects of this setting.  He is a past board member of the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA).  His therapeutic approach is interpersonal, with an emphasis on the relationships in one’s life.  Special areas of interest include:  multiculturalism and diversity, professional consultation and collaboration, eating disorders, training and supervision.

Shiraz Piroshaw Tata, Ph.D.,

Dr. Tata provides individual and group psychotherapy to NIU students, supervision to trainees at CSDC, and some outreach to the campus community. Dr. Tata has done research on issues related to acculturation in the Asian American community, and has done outreach on many topics. Dr. Tata has expertise in working with a variety of diversity, transition, identity, abuse and loss issues. Her areas of clinical interest include multicultural counseling, healing from trauma, family of origin and other relationship concerns. She uses an integrative approach in counseling and relies on humanistic, interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral perspectives.
