Substance Abuse Assessment
The purpose of a substance abuse assessment is to determine whether a student has an substance abuse problem and, if so, what type of treatment is needed to assist the student in overcoming his/her problem. Students may be referred by other departments, such as Health Services, by a faculty or staff member, friend, or family member, or by a CSDC staff member; students may also self-refer.
An assessment is scheduled for two sessions. During the first meeting with the counselor, the student provides information about his/her current and past substance use. In addition, familial, social, academic, legal, and mental health history is gathered. During the follow-up session, approximately one week later, follow-up questions will be pursued and the student receives feedback about the extent of his/her problem and individually crafted recommendations for treatment. Recommendations may include ongoing brief counseling at CSDC, outpatient counseling at a community agency, or intensive outpatient treatment or hospitalization. |
