Registration now open for Homecoming Office Decorating Contest.

Don’t miss out on one of our newest Homecoming traditions and a special opportunity to show your #HuskiePride within your department, all with some friendly competition with folks from across campus!

Our office decorating contest heads into its second year this year, with registration open now. With over 40 campus departments participating in last year’s inaugural event, we’re excited to see what teams have in store for this year. Who will lead the pack this year with their artistic prowess?

A small starter kit of decorating supplies will be available for the first 30 departments that complete the registration form by Sept. 27. These kits will be available for pick-up at Human Resource Services (1515 W. Lincoln Highway) on Thursday, Oct. 10.

BOT and Presidential Professorships nominations now being accepted.

Nominations for the 2025 Board of Trustees and Presidential Professorships are now being accepted. Please consider nominating a colleague for one of these prestigious awards. 

More information about each award and the criteria and procedure for nomination is available by visiting the links below.

Human Resource Services temporary office closures.

The Human Resource Services (HRS) office located in  Lowden Hall 102 will be closed to walk-in traffic from Wednesday, Sept. 11 through Friday, Sept. 13, reopening on Monday, Sept. 16. During this time our HRS Main location at 1515 W. Lincoln Highway will be open.

On Monday, Sept. 23, all Human Resource Services locations will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for an all-staff meeting. All locations will reopen at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23.

Join us for the Presidential Debate Watch Party hosted by NIU’s Huskies Vote on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 7-10 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center, Huskie Den!

Get ready to watch democracy in action with fellow Huskies and enjoy a nonpartisan panel discussion featuring NIU faculty, the League of Women Voters, and WNIJ radio moderators. Gain insights into key topics and debate techniques before watching the debate live.

NIU Nutrition Crew hosts lunch-hour cooking class for staff

Grab your colleagues and come make lunch with us! Change up your lunch-hour routine and head over to our Wirtz Teaching Kitchen. We’ll have all the ingredients you need to whip up and enjoy a shrimp fajita skillet. Gather your coworkers or come solo to make new campus connections. Plan to learn new cooking tricks, eat a delicious meal and, most importantly, have a great time. The fun begins at noon Wednesday, Sept. 25. Register by Sept. 18.

 

Attention Faculty: Real Talk Conference Proposal Submissions Accepted through Sept. 17.

Submit your proposals by Tuesday, Sept. 17 for NIU's Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center's 2024 Real Talk Conference: Opening Pathways to Embrace Our Humanity. Take advantage of training sessions to increase your familiarity and provide effective tools for using Navigate, NIU’s comprehensive student success management technology platform that connects students with faculty, advisors, services and more. Navigate helps students succeed by connecting them with a network of coordinated care and providing an avenue to stay engaged throughout their time at NIU.

President's Office Seeks Applications for President Staff Fellow Program.

The Office of the President seeks to identify a member of the Supportive Professional Staff or Operating Staff interested in serving a year-long professional development fellowship. The Office of the President Staff Fellow will be assigned special projects needed to carry out the functions of the Office of the President and will be afforded professional development opportunities. The fellow will be appointed for the 2025 calendar year and will report to the university’s chief strategy officer. Learn more about the President Staff Fellow Program, including how to apply. The deadline for applications is Monday, Sept. 30.

 

Community Engagement Professional Development Free Brownbag Lunch Presentation

This casual lunchtime series is your chance to learn from NIU faculty about their experiences in community engaged research, teaching and collaboration.

At noon Sept. 19, don’t miss “Outreach, Engagement and Partnerships: Lessons Vital to Universities in a Post-pandemic World” — a presentation by Professor Barrie P. Bode, Ph.D., NIU professor of biological sciences and 2023 Distinguished Engagement and Partnerships Professor.

Barrie Bode spent his career doing research on cancer biology. In response to the pandemic, Professor Bode’s community engagement and partnerships linked cancer education with an innovative campus wastewater surveillance testing program developed and still underway at NIU. The testing program's subsequent expansion provides exemplars for university/community collaboration, sustainability and evolution in a rapidly changing world.

Testing Services can process your exams.

Testing Services can make scoring your exams and quizzes faster, easier and more accurate. In addition to scoring your exams, we provide a variety of analytical reports to help you evaluate your assessments. To have your exams processed, bring your completed Scantron sheets and answer key(s) to our office in the Peters Campus Life Building, Room 120. You may submit a quiz or exam after hours by using our drop box located to the right of our office door. If you wish to use our drop box, please visit our website to obtain a copy of our transmittal form. For more information about Testing Services, please visit our website. Fall into New Habits at NIU – One-on-one Nutrition Coaching Now Offered at NIU Rec.

Have you considered changing a few nutrition habits and are looking for guidance? Do you know what to do, but need accountability to get there? NIU Recreation has you covered. Meet with one of our nutrition coaches to learn eating strategies for your nutrition challenge — whether you want to lose weight, get stronger at the gym, improve a health marker or build a better relationship with food — we’re here to help. For a one-time fee of only $99, meet with a nutrition coach through the fall semester (rates outside NIU range from $70-$100 per session). The earlier you register, the more sessions you’ll receive this fall (up to 12 visits).

 

Last chance to apply for crowdfunding with the NIU Foundation this fall.

Applications for NIU Impact, the NIU Foundation's crowdfunding platform, are due next week. NIU Impact is a place where students, faculty, staff members and researchers can raise money to turn their great ideas into reality. Since its inception in 2021, NIU Impact has helped raise nearly $400,000 from over 2,600 total gifts.

Fall campaigns run Oct. 9 through Nov. 4. Please submit your application by midnight, Sept. 17. Submit your crowdfunding application or register for one of our informational webinars on our NIU Foundation crowdfunding page.

NIU Community School of the Arts Registration Open for Fall 2024 Music Lessons and Classes!

Everyone can experience the arts this semester at NIU — registration at the NIU Community School of the Arts is open for fall.

  • Piano and guitar group classes for adults make learning to play music a more fun and affordable experience. Learn guitar or piano skills and make new friends with weekly classes beginning in September.
  • Toddlers ages 1-5 sing, dance, play and have fun in CSA Prelude and Development children’s music education classes. Sign up today and bring your kids for their first music classes starting Sunday, Sept. 8.
  • Students of any age can learn to play a musical instrument or brush up skills with private music lessons. Sign up today and start learning in September.
  • Suzuki music instruction is another popular option for beginning strings students and their parents. A new session begins this fall.
  • Piano starter class for kids ages 5-7; Symphonette strings for ages 8-16; and CSA Steelband, CSA Guitar Ensemble and Art Express for ages 5-12 all begin new fall sessions soon.

STEM Café: Critical Minerals: The Hidden Materials Required for Green Energy.

Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Fatty’s Pub and Grille

Many of the technologies we need for green energy — such as advanced batteries and solar panels — are made from materials that exist in incredibly small proportions within the Earth. These critical metals and minerals are difficult to find, and often we know little about their processes of formation.

CITL 25th anniversary

CITL celebrates 25th anniversary

2024 marks the 25th anniversary of NIU’s Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) and a celebration is in order.

CITL is hosting an open house from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11 at its location in the Wesley Foundation Building, just south of Founders Memorial Library on NIU’s DeKalb campus. You are invited to celebrate this milestone – take a tour of the Digital Media Studio and enjoy some snacks and conversation with CITL team members while you learn about the center’s history.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction helps students learn from, and with, their peers

“Everyone learns in a different way. It’s a matter of working with each student and seeing what benefits them the most. Sometimes, students just need that extra push to show they can do it.”

Kendall Kobe served as a Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader for NIU’s Huskie Academic Success Center (HASC) for two years, prior to graduating in May.
