Are you a future statistician? Economist? Computer scientist? Students pursuing a major or minor in statistics learn valuable skills that are highly desirable in many fields.

Many NIU graduates have found that our statistics programs were well worth their time and financial investment. Students graduating from our programs have leveraged their knowledge and skills in highly-rated graduate programs and employment in varied environments including government, marketing, pharmaceuticals, software development, and higher education. Our graduates have joined companies and organizations such as Nielsen Media Research, Abbott Laboratories, Information Resources, and NIU.

Internships

It is desirable to complete a summer internship while still in school. Students have the opportunity to work—for undergraduate credit—as an intern or in a department-approved co-op placement, either at an off-campus agency or for the department’s own Statistical Consulting Services.

Some of the key factors recommended in order to obtain an internship and/or a job in statistics are:

  • Having a good GPA (3.0—3.4 considered; 3.5—4.0 preferred).
  • Demonstrating communication and leadership skills.
