Alumni Spotlight

Sarah Chung

Why did you choose your major?

I chose to pursue a communication studies major because I wanted to acquire a broad range of skills that would help me be more articulate in advocacy/activist settings. I wanted to become a confident speaker and creator.

How did your major help prepare you for what you are doing now?

I am pursuing a graduate degree in counseling with a specialization in sports psychology. Thanks to the support I have received throughout my journey to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, I would like to give back to the sports community by empowering and providing support to the next generation of athletes. My major prepared me for this chapter of my life by strengthening valuable written and verbal communication skills.

What do you feel is special about the NIU program?

My instructors and advisor in the COMS department are what made this program truly meaningful. They provided useful material and positive support. I cannot thank them enough.

Why would you recommend your major program to other students?

The department is full of very knowledgeable professors and advisors. I really enjoyed the unique selection of courses that were available to me.

Is there anything you would like to tell prospective students?

Manage your time wisely. Be kind and genuine to yourself and those around you. Pursue what is in your heart.
