Alumni Spotlight

Mike Buda

Why did you choose your major?

I picked Journalism after struggling with what I wanted to do with my life. I had been writing about the Cubs for a friend's blog and with very little experience, The Northern Star thought it would be a good idea to give me a job. I think that solidified my decision to be a part of the program.

How did your major help prepare you for what you are doing now?

Without it, I don't think I would be where I am. I probably did not take full advantage of the opportunities that were laid out in front of me, but it set the foundation for me as a reporter.

Why would you recommend your major program to other students?

If you don't know what you want to do or you do, it gives you something new and exciting every day. For me, luckily, that aspect continues to this day and that is what keeps this job fun. The program gives you so many options and as long as you take advantage of them, you should be set.

Is there anything you would like to tell prospective students?

Do everything. Get as much experience as you can because the more you know and the more you can do, employers see that as a major plus.
