Many financial resources are available to you on and off campus, including the NIU Student Emergency Fund (SEF). The SEF provides financial assistance to students facing emergencies on a limited, case-by-case basis. For more information, please email Jeff Salmon at jsalmon1@niu.edu. The CSA never has emergency funding that can help a student pay down their NIU tuition so they can register for the next semester’s classes.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 17, the CSA will be accepting applications for various ESHI emergency fund grants. These one-time grants are exclusively for undergraduate students. These grants can help with rent/security deposit assistance, commuting to campus, traveling to NIU-sponsored clinicals and internships, childcare assistance, spring semester books and supplies and emergencies outside a student’s control. For more information on how to apply for one of these grants, students need to make an appointment with Jeff Salmon to discuss their current situation.
Financial Aid and Advising
NIU's Office of Student Financial Advising Services advises students and families on a range of financial topics such as understanding your financial aid and student account, how to identify additional sources of funding, and financial literacy subjects such as budgeting and credit cards.
NIU's Financial Aid and Scholarship Office guides students and families through the financial aid process. To apply for financial aid (federal and state grants, loans and work-study), you'll use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The FAFSA includes information about parents/guardians. If you're not living with your parents/guardians and/or you're experiencing housing insecurity, you may be asked to provide additional documentation. Get help answering the FAFSA question about student homelessness.
