Careers in English: Ari Owens
"Earning my Bachelor of Arts in English at Northern Illinois University was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my adult life. This program helped me to sharpen my writing and oral communication skills; these skills are ones that I utilize daily in my practice as a Student Affairs professional. I serve as an Assistant Complex Director at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and am earning my master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership. Beyond helping me grow as a writer and effective communicator, the faculty members of NIU’s English department were kind, creative, and challenged me to think critically about myself and, more importantly, the world around me. I aim to have this same impact on the students that I serve. Currently, I am in the process of applying to doctoral programs. NIU’s English department truly served as a catalyst for me to pursue higher education and to do my part in making society a more equitable place for all."
