Updates for Community College Partners

November 2025

Greetings,

We were proud to join colleges and universities nationwide in celebrating National Transfer Student Week this October. This week served as an important opportunity to recognize the achievements of transfer students and to strengthen the partnerships that make their success possible.

Through coordinated efforts led by our Office of Community College Initiatives, Orientation and First Year Programs, and numerous campus partners, NIU hosted events both on campus and at community college locations, including Harper College and McHenry County College. These engagements emphasized NIU’s ongoing commitment to meeting students where they are, highlighting available resources and fostering a strong sense of belonging throughout the transfer process.

Be sure to read the full story at National Transfer Student Week at NIU.

At NIU, we believe every Huskie should have the tools they need to succeed, especially during struggles. I invite you and your students to explore all the resources that NIU offers to help Huskies be the best they can be. Together, we continue to

HUSKIE SPOTLIGHT

Cindy Carbajal

"The number one message I would like to get across is to never be afraid to ask for help. Everyone was always super kind and supportive when I asked for help or support during moments when I was feeling a little lost or overwhelmed. Trust me, there are people who completely understand what you are going through and want to help you succeed."

— Cindy Carbajal, a transfer public health major, biology minor from Hebron, Illinois.

Celebrating our first-generation students

Nov. 8 was National First-Generation College Celebration Day. Do you know that more than half of our undergraduates are among the first generation in their families to attend a four-year college? We recognize the strengths these students bring, and we’re proud to call them Huskies.

Offering programs and services to help first-generation students adjust, NIU was named a member of the FirstGen Forward Network last year. We welcome these trailblazing students with events like a recent First-Gen Huskies Day.

NIU Huskie Harvest

Fighting food and housing insecurity

A little help goes a long way. Our Center for Student Assistance helps students find the best resources for their needs or situation. Among those:

  • Our Huskie Food Pantry provides nutritious groceries two days a week, from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays at our Chick Evans Field House. Visitors can walk in or preregister to shop.
  • Huskie Harvest is redefining how colleges can fight food insecurity and food waste at the same time. This initiative has recovered more than 21,000 lbs. of surplus catered food, transforming it into over 24,000 free, ready-to-heat meals for students at four campus locations.
  • We also offer housing support for students who are experiencing housing insecurity or who are considered to be a student in care.

Embracing our military students

We honor our military students this Veterans Day and every day at NIU.

Our support for all veterans, active duty, National Guard and Reservists starts from a student’s interest in attending NIU all the way through graduation and beyond through our Military and Veteran Services. Services include:

  • Tailored financial guidance.
  • Assistance with the admission process, ensuring credit for military experience and training.
  • Military and veteran student coaching.

Our Department of Military Science, the Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) at NIU is designed to give students experience in organizing, motivating and leading others — all while completing their bachelor’s degree of choice.
