COVID-19 Guidance

Response to Reports Of COVID-19 or Flu-like Symptoms

All NIU students are encouraged to take steps to prevent the spread of illness in their classes and on campus.

If you feel ill, whether related to COVID-19, influenza, RSV or another illness, you should stay home and seek medical attention, if appropriate. Consult with your primary care provider about testing for influenza and/or COVID-19 if you are experiencing symptoms.

For all illnesses, do not return to class until your symptoms are improving, you are feeling better, and have been free of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea for at least 24 hours. Your temperature should be measured without the use of fever-reducing medicines like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

If you become sick, you should promptly separate yourself from others and go home, or in your room until your fever is gone for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications or your symptoms have improved.

Students can elect to go home to self-isolate or self-isolate in their room.. Regardless of where a student is isolated:

  • Get tested and always wear a mask once symptoms emerge.
  • Roommates should also wear a mask and monitor symptoms if the two cannot be separated.
  • Do not attend classes, work or activities until you are fever-free, no vomiting/diarrhea. Notify faculty.
  •

Meals for Students with a Meal Plan (if You Isolate in Your Room/Apartment)

Students who isolate in their rooms, and require meals, can contact Residential Dining at dining@niu.edu and make arrangements for daily meal pick up at Patterson or Neptune Dining.

After the email is received a member of the dining staff will contact the student to:

  • Verify any food allergies or menu restrictions.
  • Coordinate a pick-up time and location.
  • Students must be masked up and bring their OneCard to pick up in person or send their OneCard with a designated contact to pick up packaged meals.
