DeKalb, Ill. — The next Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance Studio Series show is getting up-close and personal with David Ives’ play, “Ancient History,” in the Steven Building Corner Theatre from Thursday, March 18, through Sunday, March 21.
“Ancient History” is a contemporary play about relationships in today’s society. It is full of fast paced wit and twisted humor while addressing topics to which everyone can relate. The two-person cast and small space offer a unique look into the intimate affairs of one couple’s relationship.
“It’s a two person show, which they usually don’t do here,” says cast member Scotty Pawela. Pawela is one of several junior BFA students recently returned from a semester abroad in Moscow, Russia, studying with the Moscow Art Theatre. He is appearing for the first time on stage since returning to NIU.
“This (show) is different because some others are about the ensemble, but this one is, like, three people working, not 10 people …,” Pawela says. The three people are director Josh Anderson, an NIU alumnus with an MFA in acting, and cast members Pawela and Katie Stone, graduating this year with a BA in theatre studies.
“It’s looking at the privacy of a couple’s apartment,” Pawela says about the show. The production will be in the School of Theatre and Dance’s studio space, Corner Theatre, which is a smaller and by nature a more intimate space than the school’s two other spaces, O’Connell and Players. The space between the audience and the actors on stage is significantly closer and allows the audience to see more closely into these characters interactions.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $5 and only available one hour before the show at the box office, located in the Stevens Building on the DeKalb campus behind the Pizza Hut and McDonald’s restaurants on West Lincoln Highway.
