A FSYSS event is a short, discussion-oriented seminar that is designed especially for first- and second-year students but is open to all NIU students. FSYSS offers a variety of workshops to assist with students’ transitions to college and connect them with other students and members of NIU’s community. The program also connects students with the information they need to find key resource areas and people at NIU. The purpose of this program is to assist students with questions that they may have about NIU, whether they’re about residence hall life, finding a job on campus, or ways to get involved.
First- and Second-Year Experience collaborates with many different departments across NIU’s campus to bring this series of events to students.
The programs help students:
Gain study skills and create a plan for academic achievement;
Chart a path to student career success;
Find opportunities for involvement and leadership at NIU;
Develop a greater appreciation for the diverse experiences, personalities, and backgrounds of other students, faculty, and staff at NIU;
Understand their responsibilities as student, and define personal values and goals;
Learn strategies for incorporating wellness practices into college life and making safe choices in this new environment;
Meet new friends and learn how to build community;
Identify important community and campus resources to help students feel at home in DeKalb and at NIU;
All sessions are available on a walk-in basis; there is no need to pre-register. We encourage students to think about what they want to get out of their first and second years at NIU and let FSYSS help get them there!
