[1] Regional Courses Charges in this estimator are estimated for undergraduate (non-Nursing) students only. To view rates for Undergraduate Nursing students, please refer to the Off-Campus Academics website for more details.

[2] Undergraduate and graduate students may be charged material fees per course for materials specific to the course of study. Students average about $50 - $100 per term but have the potential of being assessed at a higher amount depending on their academic program or courses.

[3] To be eligible to charge books on your student Bursar account, students MUST be receiving financial aid for the term. Students can only charge up to $700 per fall/spring term on their account. Bookstore charges added to your student account will appear on your next monthly account statement or MyNIU account.

[4] Other variable fees represent charges that are not assessed to every student. They include estimates for travel and other personal expenses.

Paying for College

KEEP IN MIND: For a full year student, most types of financial aid are split between fall and spring terms. When using this estimator, make sure to enter the amount for each term separately.

  Fall 2016
Spring 2017

Note: The financial aid reflected on a bill prior to the start of a semester is an estimate and, unlike tuition and fees, may not reflect actual registration. Prior to the start of a year or semester, initial financial aid awards are based on an assumption of full-time enrollment. Financial aid is periodically adjusted to match actual enrollment. The first repackaging of aid to match current enrollment occurs a few days prior to the first billing statement for a semester (July for fall semester). Only students with registration for that semester are included. Repackaging will occur again prior to each billing statement until the semester begins. All students will be repackaged when enrollment is official at the end of the drop/add period, the second week of classes.

Grants and scholarships that are restricted to tuition and fees are disbursed to your bill prior to the first bill for a semester. Disbursement begins for all other aid, including student loans and Pell Grants, after the end of the drop/add period.

See Student’s Rights and Responsibilities for details on individual financial aid programs. It is important to note that financial aid eligibility is determined in accordance with the laws, regulations and appropriation of the U.S. Congress, the state of Illinois, the NCAA and Northern Illinois University, and is subject to adjustment or cancellation in the event of changes to these laws or your eligibility.

Estimated Totals: If this number is positive, it is an estimate of the amount you'll owe the university. If negative, it is an estimate of potential excess financial aid that may be available to cover your personal expenses.
