Supplemental Instruction helps students learn from, and with, their peers

“Everyone learns in a different way. It’s a matter of working with each student and seeing what benefits them the most. Sometimes, students just need that extra push to show they can do it.”

Kendall Kobe served as a Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader for NIU’s Huskie Academic Success Center (HASC) for two years, prior to graduating in May.

It's Time to Waive or Enroll in Our Student Insurance Program.

Students taking 9 or more credit hours are automatically billed $1,378.00 for student health insurance for fall 2024. You can find more information regarding the plan on our website.

If you have comparable insurance and have not yet canceled the plan, the United Healthcare Student Resources is now open until Sept. 30, 2024.  This is an online process only. Once you complete the waiver, and it’s accepted the charge for insurance will be removed from your student account.

The waiver deadline is firm, therefore if you do not waive the student health insurance by Sept. 30, you will be enrolled for semester coverage under the plan, and no reimbursements will be given. Question can be emailed to studentinsurance@niu.edu.

Students taking less than 9 credit hours are not automatically enrolled in our student health insurance program. However, if eligible, you do have the opportunity to voluntarily enroll for coverage. The fall open enrollment period for our optional dental, vision, teledoc and health insurance plans administered by Benefit Partners Technology is open until Oct. 31, 2024. Tips from Fellow Huskies

Emmanuel Forney

"On Sunday, I prepare and organize what I need to do for the week in advance, so I don't miss assignments. This allows me to stay on task and get my schoolwork done first, after that I am able to spend time with family and friends."

Emmanuel Forney
Marketing major, communications minor

Mary Lynn Doherty

"Take advantage of every opportunity and do not be satisfied with just meeting expectations. This is the time to see how far you can stretch your time and energy, a dollar, your thinking and your ability to empathize and understand others. NIU has so many wonderful people in our network who want to give back and see you succeed - do not pass up the chance to grow in as many different directions as possible. And ask for help when you need it, because there are deep resources to support you on your path toward your degree."

Mary Lynn Doherty
Assistant Director of the School of Music, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Education
