NIU Alumni Association offering grants.

Every NIU office, student organization and program creates value through their impressive work and impact, and the NIU Alumni Association (NIUAA) recognizes that.

The NIU Alumni Association recently was awarded a grant that will help showcase NIU’s important work to the community, and we invite all student organizations, divisions, centers and groups to apply.

Through this grant, you’ll have the chance to extend your reach exponentially in September.

The NIUAA is offering the opportunity for NIU programs to secure tent space (including table and chairs) in Mission’s Grove prior to our Sept. 23 football game against Tulsa (time TBD). Mission’s Grove made its debut last year, and it was quite popular among our alumni, family and friends as we averaged over 300 people per game in our inaugural season.

The NIUAA wants these same people (and more) to engage with your group directly so you can spread the word of your group, division or center. Those interested in participating must complete the application by Aug. 15, 2023. Decisions announced by the week of Aug. 28.

Don’t miss out on your chance to participate. Questions? Connect with NIUAA assistant director Eric Glasby, ’15, M.S.Ed. ’18 at 815-753-1677 or eglasby1@niu.edu.

Have you purchased your parking permit?

Parking permits for the next academic year (2023-2024) are now available online. Parking permits are virtual, so you will not receive a physical permit. Your license plate will act as your parking permit.

Our Customer Parking Portal provides convenient access to your parking account information. You can view your account, purchase a parking permit, make a ticket payment and update vehicle information.

A free parking option is also available. Those who take advantage of this option have a virtual green permit which allows for remote parking in Lot K on the west side of campus, just off Lincoln Highway.

For those only needing temporary parking, there are short-term parking options available. Short-term permits can be purchased online, and options include daily, weekly and monthly permits. Short-term parking is also available at pay stations and via the AMP Park mobile app.

You can visit our website for additional information. If you have any questions, please contact Parking Services at 815-753-1045 or parking@niu.edu.

Parking lot changes for 2023-2024

Parking Services is making parking lot designation changes this summer after assessing utilization surveys from this past academic year. Since parking demand has changed due to remote working patterns and hybrid/online courses, these lot designation changes are anticipated to improve utilization and convenience for all parking patrons. Visit our website to view these changes.

Policy Library update – revised policies

Revised policies are open to review and comment for a 30-day period. This provides our NIU community the opportunity to consider and respond to the revised policies before they take effect. The revised policies are:

  • Sexual Misconduct Policy and Complaint Procedures: Comments due Aug. 11.
  • Asbestos Management Plan: Comments due Aug. 19.

To submit a comment, go to our policy library website. Click on “Comment on New/Renew Policies.” You’ll be able to review the policies and provide your comments. If you have any questions, please contact the university policy librarian at policy-library@niu.edu.

Interested in the ROTC?
The Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at NIU is designed to give you experience in organizing, motivating and leading others – all while completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree of your choice.

If you have two years remaining on the path to finishing your degree, you’re eligible to take part in our summer Basic Camp. If you’re not sure about ROTC, attending Basic Camp is the perfect way to experience our program without making a commitment of service.

What is Basic Camp?

  • Basic Camp is designed to introduce you to the Army – an opportunity to experience the ROTC program without signing up.
  • This 32-day event is held at Fort Knox, a United States Army training base located in Kentucky.
  • You’ll learn leadership skills while earning credits that are applied toward your NIU graduation requirements.
  • You’ll develop the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in life, ROTC and ultimately the Army.

Find more about NIU ROTC and Department of Military Science or contact Keith F. Buchanan, scholarship and enrollment officer, at kbuchanan1@niu.edu or 815-753-6237. There’s a path for you in this leadership program.

Tip from a Huskie

"Founders Memorial Library would be my favorite place on campus; it is a great place to relax and focus on tasks. While most sites at NIU are busy and constantly moving, the library is calm. In addition, looking at the books allows me to reflect and focus on my courses, while reminding me why I decided to further my education. I would highly recommend it, especially when stressed or overstimulated."

Intelligence types.

Weekly Wellness Tip

We all have different types of intelligence. What are yours?

Do you ever feel like your intelligence is only measured by tests and grades? It’s easy to feel this way, especially when standardized tests like the GRE, MCAT, and SAT only assess our mathematical and linguistic abilities. But there are more than two ways to be smart.
