Internships

Nonprofit organizations can build their human resource capacity by providing internship opportunities for NGO students. Internship projects include but are not limited to creating volunteer recruitment strategies, improving communications outreach such as social media plans, assisting with fundraising event planning and implementation, or gathering and analyzing organizational data.

Generally, our student interns are required to have a minimum GPA and have completed basic coursework in Nonprofit and NGO Studies; student interns complete 120 hours of work in a semester for a nonprofit organization and they can earn academic credit for the internship. Organizations have the option of offering paid or unpaid internships.

Members of the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership should contact DCNP about applying to be an internship host organization. Each participating organization receives a $575 grant to pay the intern a stipend.  This internship program is a collaboration between the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership, the Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies and Career Services at Northern Illinois University, supported by the Douglas C. and Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation.

Contact Julie Ann O’Connell, assistant director, at 815-753-4410 or jaread@niu.edu to discuss becoming an internship host site.
