Criteria and Definitions

Criteria

Gateway courses targeted for improvement were based on the following criteria:

  • Gateway Courses with DFUW rates of 20% or greater and at least 25 enrolled students in the 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 academic years, and/or

  • Course with at least a 10% Equity Gap that impacted at least 10 students in the 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 academic years

*NOTE – 2019-2020 omitted due to pandemic anomaly of that academic year

Definitions

Gateway Course

A Gateway Course is defined at NIU as a course that a student needs to take within a major or is a course required to complete general studies requirements.

Equity Gap

An Equity Gap exists when the success rates for students from under-served communities are statistically significantly less than the average success rate in the course.

Success Rate

The Success Rate is the percentage of students who enroll in the course and who earn a grade of A, B, or C.
