Networking but Not Landing Interviews? Common Mistakes and What To Do Instead
December 11, 1 PM to 1:30 PM
Are you networking on LinkedIn but feel like it’s not going anywhere? Are your connections not responding, or sharing job opportunities? One of the most common mistakes we see master’s students make in their job search is engaging in passive versus active networking. Networking isn’t just about collecting LinkedIn connections or posting on social media; it’s about cultivating meaningful relationships and engaging with others. Active networking involves proactively reaching out, attending events, joining professional associations, and participating in targeted conversations to expand your network.
Join us for this virtual workshop designed for master’s students from all disciplines who are wondering:
What’s the difference between active and passive networking?
Why engaging in strategic, active networking is key to advancing your career.
Strategies for overcoming common barriers to active networking, including fear of rejection or time constraints.
How to leverage technology and social media platforms as catalysts for active networking, rather than passive observation.

People's Organizing Weekend Empowerment Retreat (POWER)
The Annual People's Organizing Weekend Empowerment Retreat (POWER) will take place Jan. 17-19, 2025. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with a priority deadline of Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. For any questions, students can reach out to power@niu.edu. The purpose of POWER is to empower student advocates, both those with previous experience planning and/or participating in activities centered on the tenets of social justice, and those who are new to the practice entirely, to enhance their toolkits for the purpose of community organizing. Our goal is for student advocates to strategically and effectively create spaces for intentional and culturally specific planning focused on coalition building while allowing participants to work as allies and collaborators. We'll give participants the "why, what and how" of organizing, and they will come away from this retreat with the skills to organize effectively. We invite you to apply and share the application link go.niu.edu/POWER2025 with any students who might benefit from this exciting opportunity.

Huskie Harvest Meal Program
If you’re looking for a healthy meal option, you can visit the main office in Wirtz Hall or the Huskie Food Pantry to pick up a free meal through the Huskie Harvest program. The Huskie Food Pantry is open for food pick up every Wednesday and Thursday from 4-6pm during the semester.
"Huskie Harvest was established with a clear mission: to feed hungry Huskies. The concept is simple - quality food left over from catered campus events is recovered and redistributed to students experiencing food insecurity, rather than discarded and contributing to landfill waste." -Nancy Prange

GRADUATE HUSKIE SPOTLIGHT
Chyna Bennett Speech-language pathology graduate student
I have learned to change the way I view the world and everything in it. I have learned to not think of everything as so black and white. College has allowed me to learn to think in a gray area of sorts and how to work with that, and I am forever grateful for it. I’ve also had to learn what battles are worth fighting and which are not, as well as to never allow those who are “superior” to me convince me that wrong is right.
