Please notify the division staff and forward documents as soon as possible to the Office of General Counsel, located in Altgeld Hall, room 330.

What if I'm approached by a non-university attorney?

Feel free to contact the Office of General Counsel at 815-753-1774.

Are my communications privileged and confidential?

Communications may be privileged only when shared with your attorney(s). To facilitate this privilege please make written correspondence "Attorney Client Privileged and Confidential Communication." Do not accidentally waive privilege by sharing the communication without the attorney included or in a non-private environment.

What if I'm injured on the job?

Report work-related injuries to the workers' compensation coordinator in Human Resource Services.

What if I'm injured on the property, but not while working?

What if I have a question regarding wage deduction summons, child support or a similar topic?

You can fill out a student grievance complaint form. If you're experiencing an issue with a faculty member, contact the appropriate department chair or college dean. If you're experiencing an issue with an employee who is not a faculty member, you may file a complaint with the employee's supervisor or with Human Resource Services.

What if I'm not sure how to get my issue addressed?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) does not allow us to disclose personally identifiable information about our students, even to parents, without the express written authorization of the student.

Collection Notices

I'm a former NIU student and I received a collection notice of legal action from NIU. What should I do?

If you received a collection notice, please contact one or both of the following offices:

  • Office of the Bursar (to inquire or arrange for a payment program).
  • Office of General Counsel (about pending legal action).

Legal Business Involving NIU

I'm a process server. Where can I come on campus, and when?

The Office of General Counsel is located on the DeKalb campus in Altgeld Hall, room 330. Our normal hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m.

Please note: The university is typically closed from a period in late December until after the first of the new year.
