Student Career Success

Second year law student Rebecca McCorkle from Moline, Ill.

We help NIU students prepare for career success by offering internships to graduate and undergraduate students. Our internships will provide you with valuable hands-on experience in the legal field. You'll be an important member of our team and increase your legal knowledge by dealing with real-world issues. You'll also benefit from:

  • Mentoring and constructive feedback.
  • Opportunities to develop communication and relationship-building skills, as well as your discipline and self-confidence.
  • Participation in governance issues.
  • Attendance at Board of Trustees meetings, bar association meetings, and staff and law clerk meetings.
  • Resume critiques and work recommendations.

Graduate Students

We employ graduate students as legal interns and law clerks. In addition to a tuition waiver and stipend, your assistantship will provide you with professional law practice experience to add to your resume. Openings are posted in January for the following summer and academic year. Check the College of Law's Career Services for Students for listings.

Please note: To be considered for an assistantship, you must be eligible for an Illinois 711 license.

The Office of General Counsel and Mayer Brown LLP Summer Diversity Fellowship in Law and Public Policy introduces diverse undergraduate students to careers in law and public policy. It provides opportunities for them to learn about the practice of law in both a large law firm and a university setting. Fellowship recipients work at Mayer Brown's Chicago office during the summer. They also have opportunities to engage with the staff of the Office of General Counsel.
