Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies

NIU's Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) is a founding member of the Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) consortium. Established in 2020 and funded by a $275,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, GETSEA's mission is to increase collaboration between the eight current U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Centers on Southeast Asia to enhance graduate education in Southeast Asian studies across the U.S.

So far, GETSEA projects have included a virtual speaker series, specialized online mini-courses, and professional development workshops for graduate students. In summer 2022, GETSEA launched the Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC)-GETSEA Virtual Language Institute. The institute offers distance Southeast Asian language instruction for Burmese, Tagalog (Filipino), Indonesian, Khmer, Lao, Thai and Vietnamese.

CSEAS is proud to be hosting three of the seven languages: Burmese, Khmer, and Lao. Language tuition support is also available. The deadline to apply for the 2022-23 academic year is July 8, 2022.
