Instrumentation

The department's instrumentation base includes both 200 and 500 MHz Fourier transform NMRs, CHN elemental analysis, a laser Raman microscope, a liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer equipped with electrospray, nanospray, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization sources, a MALDI/TOF mass spectrometer, a Siemens X‐ray diffractometer (equipped with a CCD area detector for small molecule work) and both Fourier transform and dispersion IR spectrometers. The departmental Analytical Lab houses this shared instrumentation.

Other equipment available in the department, though primarily used by one or more research groups, includes UV‐visible and infrared spectrophotometers; a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer; flame and plasma atomic emission, atomic absorption and molecular fluorescence instruments; plasma mass spectrometers; electrochemical instrumentation; gas and high‐performance liquid chromatographs; ultracentrifuges; fluorimeters; circular dichroism and optical rotary dispersion instruments; analytical centrifuges; high‐resolution scanning and microwave‐induced plasma spectrometers; several high power Nd:YAG pumped tunable lasers; a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer with electrospray ion source; and temperature jump and rapid‐scan stopped‐flow calorimeters.

Through other academic departments, researchers in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry have access to instrumentation including electron microscopes, an electron microprobe and an XRF fluorescence spectrometer.

The attenuated total reflection (ATR) accessory installed on an FT-IR spectrometer.

The circular dichroism (CD) spectrometer. CD determines protein structure, whether a protein is folded, interactions and comparing their origin.
