University Assessment Panel

Notes from Meeting of

17 October 2008

The third meeting of the University Assessment Panel (UAP) was held on Friday, 17 October 2008, at 10:00 a.m. in Altgeld 203.

Toolkit is always looking for article submissions about assessment practices at NIU. †Askins announced that the deadline for submission of articles for the next edition of Toolkit is October 24th.

Askins also announced that the latest edition of The Multiculturalist will be published on Monday, October 20th.† Cassidy noted that the call for participation in the 2009 Multicultural Curriculum Transformation Institute, which will take place May 11-15th, was just distributed.† Full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, instructors, and supportive professional staff are invited to participate in the institute, which assists participants in incorporating multicultural perspectives and content into their courses, improving communication with students, and preparing alumni to participate in a diverse workplace and society.† †††††

2008 Interim Performance Report

Cassidy discussed the 2008 Interim Performance Report that was submitted to the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE).† Due to the discontinuation of the Illinois Commitment, no performance report, per se, needed to be submitted but we were required to report on licensure examination pass rates for law and nursing, the number of undergraduates meeting initial teacher certification requirements, and to provide program review summaries for several programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and for all programs in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.† There will be a new set of criteria we will need to respond to once the Public Agenda is adopted.† The report has been distributed to the Academic Planning Council (APC) and is posted on the provostís office website.††† †

Review of Status Reports

The status reports for the B.S. and M.S. in Special Education, the M.S.Ed. and Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, the B.S. and M.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Studies, and the M.S.Ed. in Literacy Education were reviewed by the panel.† A summary of the panelís feedback will be sent to the departments.

Four funding requests included with the status reports were considered by the panel.† Two funding requests for the B.S. in Special Education and one funding request for the Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction were deferred due to a lack of information.† Both programs are invited to clarify their requests and send back additional information for the panel to consider at the next meeting.† The funding request for the M.S.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction was denied due to the fact that the request was for funding of curriculum development and recruitment rather than an assessment initiative or activity.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 a.m. †The next meeting is scheduled for 7 November, 2008 from 10:00-12:00 in Altgeld 203.
