Have You Completed Your Student Health Insurance Waiver?
As a student taking 9 or more credit hours you are automatically billed $1,419.50 for student health insurance for Fall 2026. You can find out more information regarding the plan at the United Healthcare Student Resource website.
If you have comparable insurance and would like to cancel the plan the Student Health Insurance Enrollment and Waiver site is open through Sept. 30, 2026. We recommend you complete the waiver no later than Sept. 20 to allow for any errors that may occur. You will find the link to Enroll/Waive in the blue box on our website. This is an online process only. Have any questions? Email us at studentinsurance@niu.edu.
The waiver deadline is firm; therefore, students who do not waive the student health insurance by Sept. 30 will be enrolled for coverage under the plan and no refund will be given.

NIU has helped me find a strong sense of belonging, especially through the Department of English, where faculty and students create a true community by organizing events like potlucks and offering constant support. As an international student, ISSS has also played a huge role by hosting events that help us connect, feel welcomed and navigate life in a new country. These communities have made NIU feel like home and helped me build meaningful relationships across campus.

Get out to events and guest-speaker events hosted by members of the community. You can set yourself apart from your peers by making friends with local employers and former Huskies, and those connections can lead to future career ventures and lifelong partnerships. What you do in the classroom is important, but what you do in the community can open doors that will help you for the rest of your life.
